About

Hi, I’m Thomas. For the last 6 years I have been living in Dublin, Ireland and working for Google as a Site Reliability Engineer in the Persistent Disk team (we build cloud hard drives and SSDs). Before that, I briefly contracted with a company building drones after graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Computer Science degree.

Some of my technical interests include distributed systems (with some expertise around storage in particular), languages and compilers, Linux and open-source software, web development, and automation. In my spare time on a computer (which I rarely have these days), I enjoy playing with Haskell (and Functional Programming in general) and Rust. I’m an avid user of Linux (Linux Mint), and enjoy automating tedious tasks in Bash and Python. My editor of choice is Vim, and I’ve spent countless hours perfecting my .vimrc.

Some of the various things I’ve practiced outside of Computer Science include welding and machining, car repair, and web design. (Though, I’m by no means an expert at any of these!)

I’m a life long learner and strive for a deep understanding of subjects I study. I’ll often find myself reading random Wikipedia articles for hours on end. I try to build dense connections between the things I learn, both because it’s fun to find new connections, and because it helps me remember and use my knowledge. I particularly enjoy the knowledge density of mathematics, albeit it can be overwhelming at times.

Outside of technology, I enjoy bouldering, swimming, racquetball, hiking, snowboarding, and just talking and joking around. I love to travel and have managed to do quite a bit of it around Europe (sadly a trip to Japan was put on hold by a certain pandemic…).
